WE ARE FREE

"On the day after the abolition of slavery I see a group of African-American marching down the street
of the city. They are very happy clapping their hands and singing they are free. The moment when
they see the faces of the white people standing along the street they recognize them just the same
people as had been yesterday during the time of slavery. The slave masters, policeman and others.
This moment they do not feel free any more. They hold their hands up and are slaves again."
It is the look of the other.
